Haynes directed from a script Brian Selznick adapted from his Ya novel of the same name, while the filmmaker’s longrime collaborator Christine Vachon and Pam Koffler of Killer Films produced alongside John Sloss. Amazon Studios financed »

“Wonderstruck” from Todd Haynes is the Centerpiece of the 2017 New York Film Festival

Earlier today, the New York Film Festival teased us all with another announcement in regard to their 2017 slate. This follows on the heels a few weeks ago of picking Richard Linklater ’s new movie Last Flag Flying as the Opening Night selection. The Centerpiece has now been selected by the powers that be, and it’s none other than Wonderstruck. the new film from Todd Haynes. I’ll confess, like I did last year, to this not being one I had pegged for Nyff, or at least not one of the main galas, but this certainly makes it a contender to pay more attention to. It was on my radar as a Oscar player before, but it’s definitely going to be getting some extra consideration from me now. For those wondering more about this flick, here’s just a taste. The film tells the story of a young boy »

Todd Haynes’ ‘Wonderstruck’ Set as Centerpiece of New York Film Festival

“Wonderstruck ,” the Todd Haynes film that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, will screen as the Centerpiece title of the 55th New York Film Festival this fall.

Cannes Film Review: ‘Wonderstruck ’

Haynes’ film stars Julianne Moore in the story of two children — one in the 1970s, one in the 1920s — whose stories overlap on separate journeys to Manhattan. Nyff is considered a key launchpad for films that become a part of the awards-season conversation, and the high profile slot for “Wonderstruck ” there could boost the title as it hits the campaign trail. Hayne’s last film, “Carol ,” screened at Nyff in 2015 and was nominated for six Oscars.

“Wonderstruck ” is based on a 2011 novel by Brian Selznick. whose previous book, “The Invention of Hugo Cabret,” was the inspiration for Martin Scorsese ’s 2011 movie “Hugo ,” which got its first public showcase as a secret screening at Nyff that year.

‘Wonderstruck’: Todd Haynes Returns to New York Film Festival With Cannes Oscar Contender

Our weekly Film Festival Roundup column explores notable stories and news updates from the circuit. Check out last week’s Roundup right here.

The New York Film Festival, which often imports Cannes titles for its well-curated October celebration of international cinema, has revealed that New York auteur Todd Haynes ’ Cannes hit “Wonderstruck ” will be the October 7 Centerpiece gala of the 55th edition (September 28 – October 15). This is no surprise, as the Amazon Studios /Roadside Attractions release is scheduled for a Nyff launch-friendly October 20 release.

As soon as the Competition title debuted early on the Riviera, the movie was deemed a likely Oscar contender. That’s because “Wonderstruck ” is the perfect match of rich source material and cinema. Author Brian Selznick (“Hugo ”) was inspired to adapt his own graphic novel intertwining two stories from 1927 and 1977 when costume designer Sandy Powell pulled it off a shelf and said, “This should be a Todd Haynes movie. »

Midway Oscars Forecast: A Cluttered Landscape for Indies and Streamers

It was barely four months ago that director Barry Jenkins stood alongside the baffled cast and crew of “Moonlight ” at the Dolby Theatre after defying virtually every known Oscar convention in spectacular, immortal fashion. But just eight short weeks from now, the season will purr right back to life at the Venice and Telluride film festivals. Hollywood will set its sights on that coveted gold statuette for the 90th time, and a new flock of prestige productions will vie for the industry’s top honor.

New York-based distributor A24’s victory brought the best picture tally for independents (and studio dependents) up to nine over the past decade. The only major studio to score in that stretch was Warner Bros. with “Argo ,” as the game of Oscar continues to be one of bolstering the financial outlook of artistic risks that conglomerate-tethered companies feel they can’t afford. A glance at the horizon this year reveals a healthy »

The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced yesterday, June 22, that Richard Serra has designed the poster for the 55th New York Film Festival. The festival will open on September 28 with the World Premiere of Richard Linklater 's Last Flag Flying. starring Steve Carell. Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne .

Richard Serra 's 55th New York Film Festival poster

Recent New York Film Festival posters were designed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul (2016) and Laurie Anderson (2015).

“Richard Serra ’s work has never stopped growing in my mind and memory,” said New York Film Festival Director of Programming and Selection Committee Chair Kent Jones. “During every one of my many visits to MoMA’s 2007 retrospective and to the permanent installations in Dia:Beacon, alone or with loved ones, I could feel everyone’s sense of the possible opening a couple of clicks wider. I was excited that he agreed to design this year’s Nyff poster, but when I »

Oscars at the Halfway Mark: ‘Logan,’ ‘Get Out’ and Women Directors

The year is half over and Oscar voters need to catch up on their homework. There have been many worthwhile films in the first six months of 2017, including “Get Out ” from writer-director Jordan Peele (Universal, Blumhouse); “Logan ,” the dark, tender neo-Western from director James Mangold (Fox); and the sumptuous mega-hit “Beauty and the Beast ” (director Bill Condon. Disney).

A few years ago, these would have been extreme longshots, at best. But there have been changes in Academy voters and their tastes. Recent winners including “Moonlight,” “Mad Max: Fury Road ” and “Ex Machina ” prove that voters are redefining what is considered “Oscar bait.” The blurred definition is a challenge to awards strategists, but good news for hopefuls.

Oscars: 13 Deserving Contenders From 2017 So Far

The January-June period has seen many other films with Oscar potential in various categories; see the accompanying reminders by Variety colleagues Kris Tapley and Jenelle Riley. And, needless to say, other contenders will be covered a lot before the March 4, 2018, Oscar ceremony.

Here are month-by-month opening dates, followed by a list of films that made a splash at the year’s film festivals so far. And the upcoming festivals will also add a few twists to the Oscar race.

The director and stars are listed for purpose of jogging readers’ memories; it’s not a matter of handicapping, since it’s pointless to make predictions about films that have not been widely seen.

There are also plenty of great documentaries, animated movies and foreign-language films, but those are for later columns.

“The Papers” from Steven Spielberg: Updated Oscar predictions for June

As temperatures rise, it may seem a bit silly to be thinking about what the Academy could do in the middle of the winter. Still, that’s what I do, so with the New York Film Festival announcing their Opening Night Selection, now feels like a good point to check in on Oscar. We’re still another month or so away from really having any sense of what the first half of the year has to offer, in terms of Oscars. Honestly, the only thing that so far seems like it could last the rest of the season is Brett Haley ’s The Hero, specifically for Sam Elliott ’s lead performance. He could certainly score a nomination in Best Actor. Aside from that, it’s looking like 2017 will be a second half sort of year. This time around, there’s some upward movement for Alexander Payne ’s Downsizing. the inclusion »

New Linklater Film to Open Nyff

Chris here. You may think it's a little early to start prepping for fall film festival season, but New York Film Festival wants to prove you wrong. The festival just announced its opening film and it's one we've heard surprisingly little about: Richard Linklater 's Last Flag Flying .

The film will be a spiritual sequel of sorts to Hal Ashby 's The Last Detail. with Bryan Cranston taking over Jack Nicholson 's reins. Cranston stars with Laurence Fishburne and Steve Carell. and the men head off on a coastal road trip after Carell's son dies while serving overseas in Iraq. If this sounds on the treacly side, we can count on Linklater to give it some verve. Plus if Nyff has the confidence in the film to announce its major placement several months away, the Texan filmmaker could have something special coming our way.

The film will open in the »

The Opening Night Selection for the 2017 New York Film Festival is Richard Linklater’s “Last Flag Flying”

Believe it or not, we’re already at the point in the year where fall film festival announcements are being made. Yesterday afternoon, the first shot across the bow was fired when the New York Film Festival announced Richard Linklater ’s Last Flag Flying as it’s Opening Night Selection. Getting a bit of a head start on things, Nyff is planting a flag, no pun intended, on this flick as an awards vehicle. Linklater nearly took home an Oscar for Boyhood. so he’s certainly due. Could this do it for him? Time will tell. but getting this prestigious slot at Nyff is a strong first step. There’s plenty of reason to be excited for this one. This film is a road trip tale, working as a sort of pseudo sequel to the classic The Last Detail. In the press release, Film Society described it thusly: “In Richard Linklater ’s lyrical road movie, »
